Description

ABOUT ATLIS MOTOR VEHICLES

Atlis Motor Vehicles was born in CEO Mark Hanchett's garage, ignited by curiosity and personal motivation. Mark's goal: take his energy-guzzling diesel pickup and convert it into an electric truck. He leveraged his engineering background and brought in colleagues who are experts in various fields—power tech, batteries, automotive dynamics, etc.—to design a solution that solves the biggest pain points in the electric vehicle market today.

Our mission is a big one: We will change the world with better alternatives for work truck users. We will build something that matters. We will solve problems that are key to our customers' success. We will not be afraid of big challenges. There is a lot of work to do, and we're looking for optimistic problem-solvers to help us get there.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Atlis Motor Vehicles’ battery technology team is seeking a Battery Cell Engineer (Electrolyte) to join the team that specializes in new electrolyte formulation design, development, optimization, and evaluation for ATLIS’s proprietary cube battery cell. The successful candidate will be focusing on new electrolyte formulations and new functional additives investigations, to further improve the battery performance (specific energy & energy density, cycle life, calendar life), improve battery safety while reducing costs in the meantime for production ramps.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • This position will be responsible for optimizing and developing various electrolyte formulations and functional electrolyte additives for high-performance batteries for various applications.
  • Be responsible for lab-scale testing, data analysis, and overall process development of electrolyte materials to reach production ready state. Plan and conduct design of experiments to screen and develop the promising electrolyte formulations or electrolyte additives for different battery cell chemistries.
  • Optimize the electrolyte formulations to achieve and improve cell performance such as specific energy & energy density, power density, calender life & cycle life cell, safety as well as reduce production.
  • Investigate interphase mechanism for the reaction of anode or cathode with electrolyte to further improve the ATLIS cube cell performance.
  • Plan and execute root cause analysis of failures incurred throughout development and launch
  • Collaborate with Supplier Quality team in their communication with material suppliers, related to developing and validating detailed material specifications for new materials, and resolving any quality issues.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal and external customers, vendors, or suppliers directly to optimize electrolyte formulation to increase the cell efficiency and cycle life while reducing material costs via empirical and theoretical modeling and simulation.
  • Travel in this role is anticipated to be up to 25% between ATLIS HQ, Clemson University, and other partners.
IDEALLY, YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH:
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology including material selection, fabrication, and synthesis; new battery cell design, assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery cell product development.
  • Proven experience in operating cell cyclers via the following equipment (ex: Arbin, Maccor, Chroma, Neware, Biologic Battery Tester, etc).
  • Proven experience in testing battery cells via the following test programs (ex: SOC, SOH, OCV, DCIR, dQ/dV, LSV, HPPC, PITT, GITT, etc).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able to design and conduct complex experiments, employing the DOE approach to interpret and correlate experimental results with battery product performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, great passion, and work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work as a team player in collaborative, diverse, and inclusive working environments.
  • MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on electrochemistry, material synthesis & characterizations, electrochemical techniques, or related field.
