Description

ABOUT ATLIS MOTOR VEHICLES

Atlis Motor Vehicles was born in CEO Mark Hanchett's garage, ignited by curiosity and personal motivation. Mark's goal: take his energy-guzzling diesel pickup and convert it into an electric truck. He leveraged his engineering background and brought in colleagues who are experts in various fields—power tech, batteries, automotive dynamics, etc.—to design a solution that solves the biggest pain points in the electric vehicle market today.

Our mission is a big one: We will change the world with better alternatives for work truck users. We will build something that matters. We will solve problems that are key to our customers' success. We will not be afraid of big challenges. There is a lot of work to do, and we're looking for optimistic problem-solvers to help us get there.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Atlis Motor Vehicles’ battery technology team is seeking a Battery Cell Engineer (Cathode) to join the team that specializes in novel cathode materials design, development, optimization, and evaluation for ATLIS’s proprietary cube battery cell. The successful candidate will also be focusing on optimizing the cathode formulations, mixing, and coating processes to further improve the battery performance (specific energy & energy density, cycle life, calendar life), improve battery safety while reducing the cost in the meantime.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identify next-generation battery cell cathode chemistry, help define the future roadmap for next-generation cathode material developments for ATLIS cube cells.
  • Lead advanced cathode material development and scale-up with internal teams and external suppliers to further improve the ATLIS cube cell performance such as specific energy & energy density, power density, calender life & cycle life cell, safety as well as reduce production.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal and external customers, vendors, or suppliers directly to optimize cathode active material efficiency, cost, and cycle life via empirical and theoretical modeling and simulation.
  • Help make the best chemical and mechanical processes possible by identifying critical material characteristics and specifications, including degradation and failure modes, processing capabilities, and other optimizations.
  • Conduct material composition design, proof-of-concept DOE, down-selection, process scale-up, and material analysis.
  • Work with materials team and cell engineering team to test new cathodes, conduct cathode composition-property-performance correlation, and iterate cathode materials to meet cell performance needs.
  • Travel in this role is anticipated to be up to 25% between ATLIS HQ, Clemson University, and other partners.
IDEALLY, YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH:
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery cathode technologies including high-voltage and high-capacity Ni-rich NMC, NCA, NCMA cathodes, Li-rich cathodes, LFP, LCO, LMO cathode material selection, fabrication, and synthesis; new battery cell design, assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery cell product development.
  • Proven experience in operating cell cyclers via the following equipment (ex: Arbin, Maccor, Chroma, Neware, Biologic Battery Tester, etc).
  • Proven experience in testing battery cells via the following test programs (ex: SOC, SOH, OCV, DCIR, dQ/dV, LSV, HPPC, PITT, GITT, etc).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able to design and conduct complex experiments, employing the DOE approach to interpret and correlate experimental results with battery product performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, great passion, and work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work as a team player in collaborative, diverse, and inclusive working environments.
  • MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on electrochemistry, material synthesis & characterizations, electrochemical techniques, or related field.
