Description

ABOUT ATLIS MOTOR VEHICLES

Atlis Motor Vehicles was born in CEO Mark Hanchett's garage, ignited by curiosity and personal motivation. Mark's goal: take his energy-guzzling diesel pickup and convert it into an electric truck. He leveraged his engineering background and brought in colleagues who are experts in various fields—power tech, batteries, automotive dynamics, etc.—to design a solution that solves the biggest pain points in the electric vehicle market today.

Our mission is a big one: We will change the world with better alternatives for work truck users. We will build something that matters. We will solve problems that are key to our customers' success. We will not be afraid of big challenges. There is a lot of work to do, and we're looking for optimistic problem-solvers to help us get there.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Atlis Motor Vehicles’ battery technology team is seeking a Battery Cell Engineer (Anode) to join the team that specializes in new anode materials design, development, optimization, and evaluation for ATLIS’s proprietary cube battery cell.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the development of method or material through understanding the reaction mechanism on the surface between electrolyte and electrode. Drive the development and design of new types of anode with the novel structure and composition to further improve the ATLIS cube cell performance such as specific energy & energy density, power density, calender life & cycle life cell, safety as well as reduce production.
  • Design and conduct experiments to develop anode compositions, processes, and cell integration techniques.
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal and external customers, vendors, or suppliers directly to optimize anode active material efficiency, cost, and cycle life via empirical and theoretical modeling and simulation.
  • Develop, Characterize, and help develop IP on new anode chemistries.
  • Employ various electrochemical characterization techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cycle life testing, HPPC, GITT, PITT, and reliability tests to characterize, understand, and improve the ATLIS cube cell performance.
  • Be responsible for lab-scale testing, data analysis, and overall process development of anode materials to reach production ready state. Plan and conduct design of experiments to screen and develop the promising anode types for different battery cell chemistries.
  • Further optimize anode chemistry and electrode fabrication for production scale-up of new anode-based ATLIS cube cells.
  • Travel in this role is anticipated to be up to 25% between ATLIS HQ, Clemson University, and other partners.
IDEALLY, YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH:
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology including material selection, fabrication, and synthesis; new battery cell design, assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis.
  • Hold an in-depth understanding of the surface properties of the anode to fix the fundamental problem such as low initial coulombic efficiency, anode volume swelling, unstable SEI layer, anode-electrolyte-cathode interactions, and so on.
  • Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery cell product development.
  • Proven experience in operating cell cyclers via the following equipment (ex: Arbin, Maccor, Chroma, Neware, Biologic Battery Tester, etc).
  • Proven experience in testing battery cells via the following test programs (ex: SOC, SOH, OCV, DCIR, dQ/dV, LSV, HPPC, PITT, GITT, etc).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able to design and conduct complex experiments, employing the DOE approach to interpret and correlate experimental results with battery product performance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, great passion, and work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work as a team player in collaborative, diverse, and inclusive working environments.
  • MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on electrochemistry, material synthesis & characterizations, electrochemical techniques, or related field.
